The Reminiscence Station
When residents tune in to the Reminiscence
Station, they tune in to the prime of their lives - music from the 1920s,
30s, and 40s. But, it's more than just music! It's a blend of therapies:
music, reminiscence, and recreation. Research shows that recalling sounds
evokes memories of one's youth and increases self-esteem. This makes
coping with the realities of institutionalized living easier. Better
moods mean better relationships with families, other residents, and
staff. Our announcer accompanies the songs with special trivia tidbits
and "pop quizzes" to remind listeners of the artist or the
time when the song was recorded.
In addition to individual songs, the Reminiscence
Station features special programs such as an hour of Benny Goodman,
an hour from the Swing Era, or a celebration of a special holiday -
to bring back memories from the "good old days".
The Imagination Station
Classic theater programs from days when radio
was "King" stir memories of families gathering around the
radio to listen to their favorite shows - like Charlie McCarthy, Burns
and Allen, Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly, and many more! Stories,
books, and poetry readings also continue to broaden the mind and are
a special help to the vision impaired. Families and volunteers find
that visits become easier with the accompaniment of nostalgic old shows.
Residents themselves can also exert a measure of responsibility by making
their own programming choices.
The Potpourri Station
Not Surprisingly, residents who are active
and alert can be the most challenging to provide with adequate stimulation,
especially after hours. The Potpourri Station's continuous games, exercise
classes, and senior news and current events brings the world to residents'
rooms, while at the same time encouraging reclusive residents to expand
their worlds and interact with others.
During the day the Potpourri Station provides
listeners with a window on current events, issues, and personalities.
Programs come from respected organizations such as National Public Radio,
Public Radio International, and AARP.
During the afternoon and early evening, games,
sing alongs, and exercises challenge and entertain groups or singles.
Broadway Musicals daily at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. are especially popular
with groups and staff alike!
At night, music and senior oriented talk shows
occupy light or troubled sleepers.
The Serenity Station
The Serenity Station is specifically designed
for people with dementia-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
The programming is carefully selected to be soothing, relaxing, and
non-agitating. All music is instrumental with no voices or speaking.
The programming is scheduled to assist with peaks and valleys of activities
throughout the day. For example, in the morning, when most residents
are rising for the day, gentle music plays with birds singing in the
background. In the evening, at bedtime, there are crickets chirping
in the background. During periods of higher activity in the day - programming
may be enjoyed such as Songs We now and Timeless Melodies.
In the middle of the night - when some residents
have difficulty sleeping, the Classical Sleep music will help them sleep.
Smoking
Sanctuary at McAuley is a smoke free facility. Smoking is not allowed
in the building or on the grounds.
Guest Meals
Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to share meals with their
loved ones. A tray is $2.00 and meal tickets can be purchased from the
receptionist between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Activities
Activities are a major part of daily living here at Sanctuary at McAuley. These
include music, birthday parties, family nights, pet visits, exercise,
special holiday events and many others. Calendars are posted in each room
and across from the main nurses station.

spiritual needs of its residents and families. We do provide pastoral
