History
Sanctuary at McAuley brings a rich history to the Muskegon Area being named after
Catherine McAuley.
Catherine was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1778 the daughter of a
self-made man: a builder and real estate agent ~ reared by a charming
cultured mother ~ orphaned and made a foster child ~ adopted by
wealthy step parents ~ courted as an attractive heiress ~ the recipient
of a million dollar inheritance spent in aid to the poor ~ a guardian
of orphans in the Dublin area ~ a provider of education, health
services, food, housing and employment for the poor ~ hospitable
to young women in need ~ faced with prejudice and bigotry because
of her social status and religion ~ Catherine McAuley the foundress
of the Sisters of Mercy in 1831.
It is our High Honor and Privilege to be a representative of the
Sisters of Mercy in the Muskegon area and to bear the name of Catherine
McAuley.
